Dream Come True

Most girls dream about growing up to become a teacher. Even I did. And fortunately for me, I was able to realise that dream even if it was for just a month. Joining Youth for Seva was one of the good decisions I have taken in recent past.

So my stint at teaching began at Shantiniketan School, Chandra Layout. I have always felt that teaching toddlers is the most difficult task. How do you make them understand the alphabets and the meaning of why things are named so? It is also difficult to teach kids of high school. They are in their teenage, in between childhood and adolscent. Boys tend to be a rebel and girls are confused about their future life. So I chose the safe zone and taught kids of class 5, 6 and 7. I saw innocence and admiration for the teacher in their eyes. The best part of teaching was that I got to correct their books!!! I know it sounds crazy, but I was always fascinated about having to correct notebooks, put tick marks and sign at the end of it.

The excitement of seeing a "good" in their notebook is something worth watching in a kid. An instant smile flashes across their face in self appreciation. The girls of the class turned teacher, when they taught me how to put bigger tick marks instead of the smaller ones I was using. They challenged me to identify them by their names. Remembering 15 names was an impossible task for me. I wonder how my teachers remembered all the names in my class of 50 students.

Teaching in a government school makes you realize how good your school education was. These kids don't even have a play ground to play the wonderful games that we grew up playing. The school has one computer which does not work. The only motivation for the kids to attend school is the midday meal. The whole experience made me thank god a zillion times for giving me so much more.
I hope I can contribute much more to this school and Youth for Seva in future .
